Germ Guardian H1000 TableTop Humidifier doesn't require a filter and it didn't require any "cleaning" until the end of the "season". I love the little brush it comes with to clean the metal plate and that was all I had to do after 3 months of use. I just pulled it out after storing it from the summer and it was all set to go!
I will say that how much water is used per night depends on how arid and dry it is that day. For instance, last week we had a few rainy days (we're in the Midwest)- it only emptied halfway at night so I didn't need to fill it for the following night. But, I know (from using it last year) that as we get further into the winter season, it will almost fully empty every evening. (About 8-9 hours of constant running.) But it weighs practically nothing and you can fill it up in your sink (instead of bending over a bathtub while it gets heavier and heavier like the large models). I sleep with it on the nightstand next to my side of the bed and never have any trouble at night throughout the winter with dry nasal passages, or dry throat or drying skin. I don't think it would work as much for an entire room, but it keeps the moisture right where you need it - next to you while you sleep. If you want a humidifier that is designed to put moisture into an entire room, you should buy a larger model humidifier. This is designed for just one person really. I do plan to buy two more of these when it's all said and done - one for my daughter's room and one for my desk at work. I do believe it is a tad expensive, so I will need to buy them at separate times, but I like it that much. (Really, it shouldn't cost more than $20 - $30 MAX!)
One last thing - I absolutely loathe humidifiers that you have to change filters or have to clean out the scaling that seems to happen. I'd much rather throw those away than reuse them the following season because no matter what you do - they will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER come 100% clean! The fact that I didn't have to do BARELY ANYTHING to this little gem (other than rinsing it out and using the little brush once in awhile) was the icing on the cake the for me.
Pros of Germ Guardian H1000 TableTop Humidifier
-Small size- takes up very little space on a desk, easy to move around
-Large output of cool air for its size
-Quiet- about the same noise level as our Dell computers
-Easy to refill (especially compared to larger ones)
-No filters needed
-Lasts about 8 hours (perfect for my workday!)
Cons of Germ Guardian H1000 TableTop Humidifier
-There is a low blue light in this that can't be turned off. At work I can't even see it because I'm surrounded by fluorescent lights, but it might bother some people (although some might like it as a nightlight)
-There is only one setting for this humidifier. This doesn't concern me because I enjoy the amount of air it puts out, but I can see how other people would like more options
